Modem and Router
Analog modems, which must be clearly audible dial in to Internet providers are almost gone. In their place are now ADSL or cable modems - sometimes with integrated router. Via telephone or television cable they allow much faster Internet access. If your modem has a router, you must seal your system very well. The reason: With a pure modem, the PC applies when connecting a so-called public IP address from the ISP.
An attacker or a worm could be on this IP address directly to the PC to access and exploit any vulnerabilities. This is possible with a router is not. These devices can switch easily between the way PC and modem.
The Router
Its mission is to connect two networks. In home use, it detaches your private network to the Internet. For this he stands between the modem and the home computers. The desktop PC or notebook, you hang on to the appropriate port on the router or switch if necessary a switch in between.
The whole thing works like this: If the router is using the modem logs in to the provider, it receives its public IP address. The PCs get when starting up their own internal IP addresses assigned by the router. This can usually be accessed from the outside no one. Newer routers have very often a small firewall on board, which also increases security.
Tip: Are you the manual, despite not sure that's in your modem a router? In Windows, go to Start /, type cmd and press Enter. Type ipconfig, again followed by Enter.
